BECKET, Thomas
(1118-1170)
   English nobleman and friend of King Henry II. Appointed ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY in 1162 to help control the CHURCH OF ENGLAND. To the surprise of his contemporaries, Becket took his responsibilities seriously and upheld the rights of the Church. Disputes with the SECULAR authorities led to his murder on December 29th 1170. Soon after his death MIRACLES were reported from his tomb and he was eventually elevated to SAINTHOOD. Becket's life has been the subject of many studies
   the most notable being a play and film, Murder in the Cathedral (1935), by T. S. ELIOT.
