VIRGIL
(70-19 B.C.)
   Roman poet and scholar whose history of Rome, the Aeneid, was adopted as a basic text in education throughout the Roman Empire. His work exercised great influence over early CHRISTIAN thinkers who appreciated his high moral standards and PHILOSOPHY of HISTORY and is the most quoted classical author by Christian writers in the EARLY CHURCH.
