TERTULLIAN, Quintus Septimius Florens
- TERTULLIAN, Quintus Septimius Florens
(160-225)
one of the founders of African CHRISTIANITY, apologist, and theologian. It is often claimed that he became a MONTANIST but no contemporary evidence, from his own writings or other sources, exist to substantiate the charge beyond his attempts to defend the Montanists from persecution. His Greek works have not survived, but thirty-one Latin works remain, making his writings the first significant Corpus of CHRISTIAN Latin literature.
