NEWTON, John
(1725-1807)
   English ANGLICAN Clergyman who spent four years in the African slave trade before experiencing an EVANGELICAL CONVERSION which led him to renounce slavery and became an advocate of abolition. A prolific HYMN writer he is best known for "Amazing Grace" and "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken" His works include the popular pastoral Letters of John Newton (1810).
