KUYPER, Abraham
(1837-1920)
   Dutch CALVINIST theologian, philosopher and statesman who converted from the theological LIBERALISM he espoused at the University of Leyden to Calvinist orthodoxy during his first pastorate in the small fishing village of Beesd. As a result of his educational and ecclesiastical concerns, he entered politics in 1869 where he quickly became the leader of the ANTI-REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT founded by GRONE VAN PRINSTERER. Among his many accomplishments are the founding of a daily newspaper, weekly religious magazine, a labor union, political party, the Free University of Amsterdam (1880) and a period as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1901-1905. A voluminous writer his translated works include
   Lectures on Calvinism (1898), Principles of Sacred Theology (1898) and The Work of the Holy Spirit (1900).
