KEBLE, John

KEBLE, John
(1792-1866)
English TRACTARIAN leader and author of The Christian Year. In 1831 he was elected professor of poetry at Oxford. He became increasingly concerned about what he saw as the dangers threatening the CHURCH OF ENGLAND from the REFORMING and LIBERAL MOVEMENTS. On July 14, 1833, he preached a University sermon entitled "National Apostasy," from then on he took a leading part in the OXFORD MOVEMENT. In 1870 Keble College, Oxford, was founded in his memory.
